North Korea deploys gun marked with frightening message to US

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have drawn fresh attention after three North Korean self-propelled artillery guns were spotted near the heavily fortified border with South Korea. The weapons were seen with their barrels pointing south while North Korean soldiers carried out fencing work inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). One gun reportedly carried a striking slogan directed at America: “Destroy the US imperialist aggressors, the sworn enemies of the Korean people!”

The display comes amid rising tensions following a September 21 landmine explosion inside the DMZ that injured three South Korean soldiers. South Korea’s military concluded, following a joint investigation with the United Nations Command, that North Korean mines had been deliberately planted south of the military demarcation line. The UN Command also determined that the incident involved a violation of the Korean War Armistice Agreement. North Korea has rejected Seoul’s accusations.

The visible artillery has also attracted attention from security experts. Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University, described the unusually conspicuous positioning as a possible signal that Pyongyang intends to enforce its border policy through military force rather than dialogue. South Korean officials said they were monitoring the weapons, which appeared to be older 122mm systems.

The developments follow warnings from Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who said South Korea could face “the most horrible and distressing situation” if tensions continued. North Korea has also announced plans to put anti-South Korean propaganda loudspeakers on standby along the border. Although the developments have raised concerns, they do not establish that a wider war is imminent. The situation remains tense, with both sides watching each other’s next moves. ⚠️
