Maine Schoolboy, 14, Disappeared Nearly a Week Ago – His Body Has Now Been Found

When a Maine high school freshman left his house one evening, no one knew he would go missing. The local authorities launched an extensive search operation to locate the boy and revealed the heart-wrenching results days later.

Theo Ferrara was the light of his mother’s life and was loved by his family and friends. The 14-year-old lived with his family in Freeport, Maine, and was a student at Freeport High School.

The teenager was often seen spending time with his family and was known for his kind nature. Nothing seemed out of place in his life until the day he didn’t return home. His worried mother soon informed the authorities that he was missing.

On September 22, 2022, Theo left his home wearing his blue backpack but never returned. His mother, Mia Kulla Ferrara, informed the authorities and wrote a Facebook post to tell her friends and family about her beloved son. She said:

“Our son went missing today and was last seen at 4:30 p.m. on Flying Point Road in Freeport heading towards Brunswick.”

The worried mother requested her friends and family to contact her if they knew anything about her little one. Meanwhile, the Freeport and Brunswick police and several other local authorities launched a combined search operation to locate Theo.

The Search Operation
The large-scale search had sparked hope in Mia’s heart about her son’s return. While praying for his safety, she thanked the authorities, volunteers, friends, and family for their support. The distressed mother stated:

“We love Theo so much and just need him home safe.”

Five days after Theo went missing, the authorities got their big break. A Marine patrol aircraft located a body near Bunganuc Point, and the officers immediately rushed to rescue the unidentified person.

The Body
“The body was recovered and taken to the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office, where it was identified as Ferrara,” Freeport Maine Police Department stated. With the identification, Mia’s hopes turned into grief as she mourned the death of her boy.

The police department thanked all local authorities involved in the search operation and asked people to give the Ferraras space to deal with the painful loss. Meanwhile, Superintendent Jean Skorapa from Regional School Unit 5 stated:

“It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter to inform you that this afternoon, Theo Ferrara was found deceased.”

The Devastating News
The entire community was devastated after Theo’s unexpected demise. While the investigators worked to find the cause of his death, Freeport Police Chief Nate Goodman spoke to the news and expressed his sadness:

“We’re all human. We all feel it.”

Meanwhile, the school district set up a support program at Freeport High School for the students and teachers in case they needed counseling after learning about Theo’s unexpected demise. The school district was aware such incidents could “generate anxiety for some students.”

The Disturbed Community
Superintendent Skorapa urged parents to let their children speak about the incident and answer their questions. He also asked them to contact the school if their child needed extra support during this difficult time.

The news of Theo’s death reached the school staff shortly after the authorities identified his body. As the heartbreaking news spread, a feeling of sadness floated in the school’s atmosphere. 17-year-old Adian Morley said:

“It’s depressing. Everyone’s crying leaving school.”

Helping the Students
“He was a very nice person. One of the best kids I knew,” a 15-year-old anonymous student said. After the social workers from the school district reached Freeport High School, the canteen turned into a drop-in center with free food and dogs to relieve anxiety.

The social workers tried their best to talk to the students, understand their feelings and help them cope. However, according to Nancy Rochat, an experienced social worker, the students only felt comfortable opening up to their friends.

The Online Community
While counselors and social workers helped students and staff members deal with the tragedy, netizens shared messages of support under Mia’s Facebook post about her son. Here are some of the comments:

“My 14-year-old son and I have you and Theo on our minds and in our hearts. My son said his football team would dedicate their game in honor of Theo tomorrow.”
