Teacher Is In Big Trouble After Asking A Latino Student To Speak English In The Classroom

One teacher in Texas thought she would be able to force a Hispanic student to speak English because her classroom was located in the United States of America.

Although English is not the official language of America โ€“ there is actually no official language despite the majority of people speaking and reading English โ€“ millions of people in America speak and rely on Spanish to get through their daily routines.

Now, a Texas teacher at Socorro High School has come under fire for y*lling at a Spanish-speaking student to use the English language while in her classroom. The teacher, who is being called a r*ci*t for her remarks against the student, worked in the El Paso, Texas High school district and was acting as a substitute teacher that day the video was recorded exposing her point of view.

The substitute teacher tells the male student, โ€œSpeak English. We are in America.โ€ She is located in the middle of a bustling classroom and doesnโ€™t seem to care whether or not anyone overhears her speaking to the Hispanic student in this way even though many people in the classroom are Hispanic as well.

The student was named Carlos Cobian. He was attending school at Socorro High School when he walked into the classroom while watching the soccer match between Argentina and Uruguay on his smartphone. The teacher asked him if he would hand over the device since he was being disruptive by watching the video in class. He replied, โ€œPor que?โ€ which translates to โ€œwhyโ€ in the English language.

At that point, the teacher made the comment about Cobian speaking Spanish in the classroom. Although he simply used a common phrase that many English speakers are familiar with, the teacher was offended and demanded that he use English while in the class. Cobian was shocked, to say the least especially since the high school is located in a border town on the Mexican-American border in the southern part of Texas.

โ€œFor her to come to teach at Socorro, being a sub, like ninety percent of the students here are Mexicans and Latinos.โ€

Cobian does not know why the teacher signaled him out for using his phone when other students were on their devices as well. The Socorro Independent School District allows students to use their phones as much as they want while on campus so long as they are using the device for educational purposes only with a teacherโ€™s permission. However, few students follow that rule and many people *b*se the leniency of the school district by using their phones as Cobian had to watch entertainment like the international soccer match.

Since the incident was recorded on video and uploaded to social media, it soon went viral online. Now the El Paso area school district is looking into the inc*dent and launching an investigation to see if the substitute teacher should be fired or not.
